The success of the event depends on the ability to choose a quality product.

When choosing peeled nuts or shelled products, the following points must be kept in mind:

  1. The food product should exude a very delicate and pleasant smell. It should clearly capture the notes characteristic of a particular type of nut. At the slightest hint of rancidity, mold or high humidity, the purchase should be discarded.
  2. You need to try nuts before buying. Moreover, this should not be the product that lies on the window in a purified form, but a copy opened with one's own hand. Bitterness or excessive softness are obvious signs of a damaged component. You should not try yet, thinking that you just caught an unsuccessful nut, it is better to abandon the entire batch.
  3. Even if you need to store peeled nuts, it is better to buy them in the shell. Independent processing of blanks will maximize the shelf life of products.
  4. It will not be superfluous to inspect the bag in which the components were stored. You need to make sure that there are no larvae, adult insects, mold and strange spots on the burlap.

Tip: It is highly discouraged to purchase a product that was originally packaged in polyethylene. Often, such products begin to rapidly deteriorate immediately after falling into new conditions. This is due to the prolonged lack of contact of nuts with oxygen, which allowed them to remain in good condition.

Universal recommendations on how to store nuts that apply to all types of nutrients:

  • Experts do not recommend immediately purchasing too many nuts. Despite the fact that there are approaches that can preserve the product for a year, their taste will still change. It is better to determine how much food will be eaten within 2-3 months and limit it to this.
  • The main factor that causes peeled nuts to rot quickly is air. Whereas inshell products are recommended to be kept in canvas bags providing constant air circulation, bare kernels should be placed in sealed glass jars or plastic containers.
  • Storage temperature must be stable. The products are well maintained at room temperature and standard humidity, the main thing is that direct sunlight should not fall on the products.
  • To save the peeled nuts for six months, you can use the freezer. Pre-processed kernels are laid out in plastic bags and frozen with preservation of all useful properties. Re-freezing is prohibited!

In addition to these points, there are also specific recommendations that apply to walnuts and pine nuts. Cashew is stored only in purified form, at room temperature, in the refrigerator or freezer.Shelf life in this case ranges from 1 month to 2 months and six months, respectively. Hazelnuts are very undemanding to the conditions due to the special texture, but it will not retain its properties for more than three months at room temperature or for six months in a freezer.

Walnut Storage Features

Walnuts are cast with a high content of healthy fats, but it is for this reason that they get rancid taste and smell faster than other types of products.

To save the cleaned kernels (in this form they need to be harvested), you must adhere to the following rules:

walnuts

  1. Fresh product must be fried in a hot frying pan without oil for a quarter of an hour. After such processing, the product cools and goes to storage.
  2. If the nuts are eaten within 1-2 weeks, they can be poured into a glass or plastic container with a sealed lid and put in a warm, dry and dark place. With high humidity, mold can appear on nuts.
  3. To preserve the freshness of the product at home for 2-3 months, it is necessary to place the workpiece in a dry container without a drop of liquid and place it on the top shelf of the refrigerator.
  4. Walnuts can be stored in the freezer for up to a year. They need to be wrapped in cling film and set the unit to quick freeze. Before using such products, you need to not only defrost them, but also heat them in the oven for about 10 minutes, then the kernels will become even tastier.

In the shell, it is recommended to store only green nuts, and then in the form of jam, tincture or specific candied candied fruits.

Important points in storing pine nuts

In this case, again, it is not recommended to purchase peeled nuts; the best option would be to handle the cones yourself and form the blanks. To obtain the optimal result, we sequentially perform the following manipulations:

  1. First, the cones need to be slightly burned over an open fire or heated in an ordinary frying pan. Cooled specimens are cleaned manually or using a special mill, extracting nuts.
  2. The resulting nuts are again fried in a dry pan for a quarter of an hour. They need to be stirred constantly, otherwise the product will burn.
  3. Next, lay the blank on a tarp and dry in a dry, warm room for 2-3 days, stirring occasionally. You can additionally cover the embankment with tarpaulin.
  4. We lay out the finished product in bags made of canvas or soft fabric. We remove them in a dry, dark, warm place, inaccessible to rodents and insects.

Pine nuts

In this form, the product can be stored for up to six months. Purified nucleoli can be stored for no more than a couple of months. To do this, put them in dry and clean plastic bags, which are hermetically sealed and put away in the refrigerator. If cedar kernels need to be stored for three months, then they need to be kept again in the refrigerator, but not in polyethylene, but in a glass jar with a tight lid.

Regardless of the approach chosen, the product should be regularly tested, cleaned from stocks of missing nucleoli, in some cases, even additionally calcined (if there is a specific smell of high humidity).
