How to remove gray and yellow from white things at home?

It seems that our grandmothers used magic outside of Hogwarts, because they knew exactly how to wash white things so that their appearance dazzled, and at the same time they had neither washing machines, nor miracle powders. Why doesn't our generation do the same? Well, in part we are lazy and prefer to give money for another advertised product, but on the other hand, technological progress in the issue of white brightness does not always work in our favor. How many times did you get the laundry out of the machine and wanted to load it back right away? But there are no hopeless situations, and we decided to collect the main available means at hand, with which you can save your favorite things from dullness and yellowness at home.

Household chemicals

Simple household chemicals

It is hardly possible to completely forget about household chemicals in the modern world, and if the question of naturalness and safety of a product is not too acute for you, you can use the following tools to return whiteness to grayish or yellowish things.

  • "White". Where without her. It is worth saying that the product is very aggressive and its frequent use will significantly reduce the product's life. Occasionally, “White” can be added directly to clothing in a drum, especially if yellowness or gray is not old.
  • "Domestos". Few read the instructions for this tool, and there, by the way, it is said that you can soak the laundry in it! Some even pour the product into the washing machine! The result of this bleaching method is praised by many housewives, so you can try it.
  • Dishwashing Detergents. Often, white things come into direct contact with the skin, absorbing fat and sweat, which leads to yellowing. To wash linens, towels, and underwear, add a little dishwashing detergent directly to the powder compartment.

Tip

In the rubber band of the door of the washing machine, dirt can accumulate, which during washing will affect the color of white products. The same goes for dust in pockets and pleats. Remove such dirt in advance so that you do not have to wash the laundry again.

Laundry soap

Laundry soap

At first glance, it is hard to believe that this brownish mass can help wash things away: it seems that the yellowness from such a procedure will only increase. But you probably remember how mothers washed your socks and T-shirts with household soap, so why don’t you trust him? How can it be used at home? Everything is very simple.

  • Lather the wet thing thoroughly so that it is dirty yellow in color and leave it in a basin without water for a period of 2 hours to 1 day.

Tip

Instead of a basin, you can use a plastic bag: they say that the effect is even stronger. The main thing is to try to remove the air from it to the maximum before you tie it, creating the effect of a vacuum.

  • 200 g of soap shavings per 5 liters of water is an ideal mixture for digestion. When heated, soap will not produce harmful vapors, such as powder, and the effect on the fabric will be more gentle. In such a mixture for boiling, you can also add 3 percent hydrogen peroxide or even a little ammonia at 2 tbsp. l for 5 liters of water.

Tip

Only cotton and linen can be boiled, and the digestion time depends on the density of the fabric: for thin linens, it is enough to bring the mass to a boil and immediately remove from heat, and for stronger products, it may take 20-30 minutes to simmer.

After digestion, the product does not require additional washing, and it can be rinsed as soon as the solution cools down, but after a simple processing of the fabric with a bar of laundry soap, it is better to wash the item in the usual way.

Zelenka

Tinting agents

In fact, even ordinary powder has this effect if it contains blue granules. You can enhance the effect with the three available dyes.

  • Blue. It is enough to dilute it in water until a pale blue solution is obtained, and then rinse the grayed thing in it.
  • Zelenka. The solution should also be weak, and the product in it is simply rinsed without soaking.
  • Potassium permanganate. But this substance is usually diluted to a bright pink color of water, the white thing is preliminarily rubbed abundantly with household soap and immersed in the solution for 20-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Tip

Make sure that there is no precipitate or insoluble granules in the solution, otherwise the thing will become stained.

Hydroperite

Peroxide or Hydroperit

A solution of peroxide (3%) or hydroperit tablets help whiten things when soaking and digesting at home. They work well both on natural fabrics and on synthetics, which cannot tolerate high temperatures. Just dilute 200 ml of peroxide or 10 tablets of gdroperite in 5 liters of water and leave the product in solution for 1-3 hours. Such soaking is best done on a clean thing, and then just rinse it. Salt or soda can also be added to the solution.

Things after bleaching

Ammonia

Try the ammonia! Despite the pungent odor, it is actively used to whiten things. The solution with it should be quite hot: from 40 to 70 ° - and it is rarely used alone. You can mix it with the following substances:

  • peroxide - in a ratio of 1: 1 (2 tbsp. L. Per 5 liters) for soaking for 30-40 minutes before or after washing;
  • soda or salt - 3: 1 (6 tbsp. L. Soda or salt and 2 tbsp. L ammonia for 5 liters) for soaking for 30-40 minutes before or after washing;
  • solution during digestion (it’s better to leave the kitchen, as harmful fumes are released).

The product is quite aggressive, so it is often not recommended to use it, but at the same time, with careful rinsing, there is no danger to health.

Salt in a wooden spoon

Soda and salt

To effectively whiten things at home, a solution of salt or soda is best done in hot water, so this option is not very suitable for synthetics. In its pure form, soda is often added directly to the washing machine, and for pre-soaking it or salt is best mixed with peroxide and shavings of laundry soap, or at least with powder. In this hot solution, the product is soaked for several hours, and then it is washed in the standard mode.

Boric acid

Boric acid

Judging by the reviews, boric acid is an ideal tool for rinsing white things after washing. 1-2 tbsp. l diluted in 3 liters of warm water and rinse the thing in this solution for several minutes. Then rinse with clean water, and your white product shines again with whiteness!

Potato starch

Starch or baking powder

To combat yellowness and greyness, some housewives rinse white things in a solution of starch or baking powder. Usually use literally 1-2 tbsp. l 5 liters and do not resort to an additional rinse with clean water. It is also common practice to add baking powder directly to the washing machine drum to white things. Numerous reviews on this method guarantee the desired effect, so you can try it without fear.

All of the funds listed are absolutely available and may already be in your home. So why not first check how well the budget option works.

Never mix white and colored things in a typewriter - even a sock accidentally caught in the laundry can cause permanent damage.
