Is it worth buying a mattress cover or can you do without it?

Can I sleep on the bed without a mattress pad? Of course you can! Is it worth saving on a mattress pad? Definitely not. This simple "mediator" between bedding and mattress performs several important and useful functions.

Types of mattress covers

Mattress covers are not just rag covers. They are divided into several types, depending on what function they perform:

  • Protective. These are, as a rule, single-layer products made of dense fabric, which are attached to the mattress in the same way as stretched sheets, or with rubber bands at the corners.
  • Protective mattress pad

  • Corrective. They are bought when the mattress is too hard, but I want it softer, or vice versa. Also, for some time, the product will help if the spring mattress "sank" in a certain place.
  • Correcting mattress pad

  • Special. For example, waterproof - they are used on the beds of young children, paralyzed people and patients with enuresis.
  • Waterproof mattress pad

Why is a mattress pad needed?

If we talk about a conventional mattress cover, the main thing that he does is to protect the mattress from pollution. After all, the sheet not only absorbs well, but also passes sweat mixed with sebum - all this is a layer below. There are no such spots on the surface of the mattress, because it is difficult to clean it. But to wash and dry the mattress cover is a matter of a couple of hours.

Why is it important to keep the mattress clean? Because the accumulated sebum and particles of exfoliated skin is an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi and dust mites. Bacteria can lead to skin (and not only!) Diseases, ticks and fungi - to allergies.

In addition to protection against pollution, the mattress pad performs several more functions:

  • If a person sweats in a dream, the sheet is quickly saturated with moisture and gets wet on the surface on which it lies. When there is no mattress cover, there is a risk that after a while the top layer of the mattress filler will begin to decay (often these are natural materials - felt, batting or coconut coir). In this case, it remains only to change or repair the berth, because the smell will be depressing.
  • Mattress covers are not always made of high quality fabric. If you got a mattress “dressed” in synthetic knitwear, then after some time spools form on its surface from the friction of the sheet. They are very uncomfortable to lie on. Even a simple thick cotton mattress pad will save the situation.
  • Continuing the topic of cheap fabrics, it is worth remembering about mattresses that “shock” and “magnetize” hair. It is advisable to hide them under a layer of fabric that is not electrified.
  • Have you bought an expensive mattress with a smooth jacquard coating and covered it with a silk sheet? Alas, with it you will slip. Between two slippery fabrics a plain cotton mattress pad is useful.
  • The mattress covers are more expensive - for example, made in Germany - made of fabric with antibacterial impregnation. Such products will help people with weak immunity or those who are being treated for a disease of a bacterial nature. And for a crib, this is a great option.

An impressive list of arguments, isn't it? And all this is just about ordinary textile mattress covers. Do not forget about the rest - corrective, massage, with a memory effect. Take a look at these options if you are thinking about changing a mattress.

A pair lies on a correcting mattress pad

For example, many have heard that from back pain you need to sleep hard. But is it worth it to immediately buy a hard mattress? And if you can’t lie on it all night? The most practical option is to buy an inexpensive mattress cover from several layers of coconut coir and try to sleep on it.If this is “not yours” - well, wasting a couple of thousand is not so pathetic as buying an unsuitable mattress for a couple of dozen.

If there is no mattress cover

A few tips for those who so far do without a mattress cover:

  • Change bedding as often as possible. Do not wait until sweat and sebum settle on the surface of the mattress and begin to penetrate inside along with fungi and bacteria.
  • In the heat, do not cover the bed immediately - let the moisture that has accumulated overnight in the fibers of the sheet evaporate.
  • If you notice that any spots have already appeared on the mattress, try to remove them immediately. For example, you can mix the pulp from ordinary soda and water, apply to the cover and rub it with a brush. Then - just wipe off the dried powder.

And the main advice - still buy a mattress cover. It is inexpensive, and solves so many problems.
