Can grandma's china be washed in a dishwasher?

Porcelain dishes can be washed in a dishwasher, but there are exceptions to this rule. Cups and plates made of expensive material are highly fragile, they do not like temperature extremes and the aggressive effects of detergents.

In this article I will tell you what dishes can safely be sent to the dishwasher, and in which cases it is better to wash valuable cups and plates by hand.

Which porcelain is suitable for a dishwasher?

To begin with, carefully inspect the service and remember how old it is in the family. If this is the inheritance left after the great-grandmother, then you will have to forget about the machine wash: fragile dishes simply will not survive it.

Set aside the cups and saucers with gilding, a delicate color pattern. Under the influence of a powerful pressure of water and detergent with abrasive particles, all beauty will quickly fade and wipe away.

Suitable for dishwashers made of bone china, marked "Bone China" or a special icon that allows machine washing. As a rule, such services are released relatively recently, over the past 10-15 years.

Porcelain dishes in the dishwasher

What is important to remember?

Remember that you can’t just unload dirty dishes from porcelain into the dishwasher, start the program and go about your business. In this case, after stopping the unit, you will receive dishes with broken edges and a very faded pattern.

Before you start laying dirty dishes in the car, it is important to do the following:

  1. Rinse plates and cups immediately after eating, trying to rid them of food debris. Carefully wipe off stuck pieces with a rubber spatula so as not to damage valuable material.
  2. Put a special silicone mat for dishes in the dishwasher so that the saucers and plates do not slip and do not collide against each other while washing.
  3. Load dishes so that they do not touch each other. Place the cups on the top drawer away from each other.
  4. Together with china, cutlery and other kitchen utensils cannot be washed. Under the influence of a strong pressure of water, foreign objects can damage a valuable service.
  5. Choose a delicate wash program. The water temperature should not be higher than 50 degrees. If the machine has such an option, then disable the drying and steaming function in advance (otherwise you will have to cancel the program manually before the corresponding indicator lights up). Porcelain does not like temperature changes, it cracks, so after washing it must be allowed to cool, and then dried in the open air.
  6. Pay attention to the detergent. It should be only a gel, without abrasive particles and bleach or acids in the composition. Aggressive components can scratch fragile dishes and make their drawing or ornament unusable.

If all the above conditions are met, carefully load the porcelain dishes into the machine and start the delicate cycle.

Porcelain cups and saucers

After the wash is finished, take out the service and carefully lay out on a kitchen towel, allow excess water to drain. Then gently pat the cups and plates with a soft cloth. Now the service can be cleaned.

Despite the fact that bone china tolerates washing in a dishwasher, I do not recommend doing it too often. Fragile and expensive dishes should be washed by hand. This will preserve its appearance, protect it from the formation of cracks and chips.
