Washing an old fur coat in a washing machine

Wash: pros and cons

Everyone knows that a fur thing can be washed in a dry-cleaner, but is it possible to wash the fur in an ordinary household washing machine? Answer: yes, if it is artificial. Such a product is created not from real skins, but from simple synthetic fibers, so there is nothing to fear. However, we recommend that you read the information on the label before washing to confirm that you can machine wash. As a rule, you can unconditionally wash fur from a jacket or down jacket, fur mittens and decor items (covers, rugs). All other items must have a special washing permit.

To wash the fur, you must perform the following steps.

  1. Comb the item with a brush or comb in order to remove dust and dirt, otherwise during washing it can go deeper into the structure of the item.
  2. Set the delicate mode, the temperature is not above forty.
  3. Do not forget to fasten buttons and zippers - this way the product will retain its shape. To clean the fur collar from the down jacket, it must first be unfastened.
  4. After washing, gently comb the pile.

What to do if the fur is natural? Unfortunately, it is impossible to wash products from animal skins, as wetting of the skin leads to a change in the shape of the finished product. However, there are several effective methods of dry cleaning, eliminating yellowness and stains that are worth taking note of.

Potato starch

Method number 1

Due to its excellent ability to absorb odors, grease and dirt, bulk solids are often used to clean clothes of various kinds of contaminants. To remove yellowness, semolina and starch are also used as the most sparing absorbents.

  1. Spread the fur product on a flat surface.
  2. Sprinkle the dirty place with the chosen substance - semolina or starch.
  3. Dampen the surface of the fur with water to make it slightly damp.

    Tip

If, in addition to yellowness, dirt is present on the fur product, try gently rubbing the fur in the palms of your hands, as with a hand wash.

  4. Leave the product for a while until the fibers dry completely. Then shake the item and comb out the grits / starch with an ordinary brush.

Pure light fur

Method number 2

A less gentle way to clean white fur is to wipe with peroxide and ammonia. For this, the following solution is prepared: a glass of water + a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide + 2 or 3 drops of ammonia. The resulting liquid can be applied to the pile and for prevention, and to remove yellowness from clothing from the Arctic fox.

Tip

If the solution does not cope well with the yellow tint, try reducing the amount of water in the recipe.

Using peroxide and ammonia, it is important to remember that these substances are applied only to the pile, but not to the meszra (skin), otherwise the fur coat may lose its original shape.

Refined gasoline

Method number 3

Owners of white furs can take this note.To clean white fur at home, you just need cleaned gasoline and an ordinary sponge. The sponge should be moistened with gasoline, and then gently run it on the surface of the thing. Such wiping reliably removes yellowness, and this effect will increase if method No. 1 is added to this method: sprinkle the starch on the fur, which absorbs unpleasant odor and residual dirt.

White fur collar

We clean the collar

Some difficulties arise when cleaning a fur collar. Wash a fur collar, as mentioned above, is impossible, except in cases where the collar is part of a down jacket. For this item of clothing, only dry cleaning is suitable.

  1. Before cleaning the collar, it should be unfastened from the thing.
  2. Shake the collar, knock out dust from it.
  3. Clean the pile using a solution of hydrogen peroxide, as in method No. 2.

In our country, blue washing is widespread. It is ideally suited to clean the fox fur collar, which has a unique silver color. Just dilute the blue in the water until a light blue liquid is obtained and wipe your collar with a sponge moistened with a solution. This method perfectly eliminates yellow spots and darkening.

If the arctic fox collar from the down jacket is quite small and narrow, then an exception can be made for it and a wet wash can be carried out, but not machine, but hand. Take a regular shampoo and dilute it with water. Shake this liquid and run the foam over the fur. Try to touch only the villi, but not the skin. After the foam has absorbed dirt, rinse the collar with cold water, then comb it and leave to dry at room temperature.

Most of the dirt, of course, accumulates on the boots: the fur here quickly loses its freshness both inside and out. To keep boots with both natural and faux fur longer tidy, it is recommended to use ordinary soda: it is intensively rubbed into dry fur until it absorbs all the dirt. Sometimes for complete cleansing it is necessary to do several cleanings at a time. This method is perfect for both fur inside and fur outside, and soda can clean white fur on boots without much effort.

Here are a few more rules to help you clean your fur properly.
